Before dawn the birds start
something i never noticed
until i started waking up at 4am
they're not waiting for the sun
they start early on purpose
i've been thinking about that

I only write at midnight
which is impractical
and the only time it works
the day is too loud
the midnight has the right frequency

The cold makes everything precise
edges clear, breath visible
i like winter nights for this
everything fuzzy in summer
everything blurred in grief
but winter cuts through
i can see where things end

I walked to the end of the street
and back again
not because it helped
but because moving felt like doing something
the streetlights don't ask questions
i appreciated that

I counted the tiles in the ceiling
i counted my breaths
i counted the cars that passed outside
one in a while
sleep is not a door i can knock on

Everything is louder at 3am
the thoughts i don't have time for
during the day
come home
the refrigerator hums
and i think about you
