We camped every summer until they were thirteen
after that they didn't want to
i understood
we still have the tent
it's in the garage

I miss the version of my life
where i didn't know
how things would turn out
not because it was better
because the not-knowing
had a kind of lightness to it

makes you stay inside
makes you sit with yourself
sometimes that's what you needed
and didn't know it

before we were married
sixty years ago

Saturday morning cartoons
and cereal in front of the tv
my mother pretending to be mad
and actually not caring at all

nobody told me

Summer mornings when i was a kid
we'd be outside by eight
and back inside at dark

they want air conditioning and wifi
i don't blame them
but i miss something i can't explain

We sold the house in '09
the kids were grown
it made sense to sell it
i drove past it last summer
someone painted the shutters blue
i didn't like it
but i didn't have a say in it

I drove through the old neighborhood
the house is a different color
someone put up a fence
where there wasn't one
everything fits except me
i drove out slow
