About Emily Dickinson

Fewer than a dozen of her nearly 1,800 poems appeared in print while she was alive, and those were edited into conventional shape without her consent. Everything unusual about her — the dashes, the slant rhymes, the abrupt capitals, the refusal to close a thought — was treated as error to be corrected for decades afterwards.

Read her for the sentences that stop mid-turn. Her subjects are death, faith, pain and the mind observing itself, and her characteristic move is to report an interior event with the flat curiosity of a witness rather than the distress of a sufferer — a fly in the room at the moment of dying, a funeral held inside a brain. The hymn metres she uses are deliberately ordinary, which makes what she does inside them stranger.

You left me – Sire – two Legacies – A Legacy of Love A Heavenly Father would suffice Had He the offer of – You left me Boundaries of Pain – Capacious as the Sea – Between Eternity and Time – Your Consciousness – and me –
Wild nights - Wild nights! (269)
04/28/2026 14:58h
Wild nights - Wild nights! Were I with thee Wild nights should be Our luxury! Futile - the winds - To a Heart in port - Done with the Compass - Done with the Chart! Rowing in Eden - Ah - the Sea! Might I but moor - tonight - In thee!
To fight aloud is very brave - (138)
04/28/2026 14:58h
To fight aloud, is very brave - But gallanter, I know Who charge within the bosom The Calvalry of Wo - Who win, and nations do not see - Who fall - and none observe - Whose dying eyes, no Country Regards with patriot love - We trust, in plumed procession For such, the Angels go - Rank after Rank, with even feet - And Uniforms of snow.
This World is not Conclusion (373)
04/28/2026 14:58h
This World is not Conclusion. A Species stands beyond - Invisible, as Music - But positive, as Sound - It beckons, and it baffles - Philosophy, dont know - And through a Riddle, at the last - Sagacity, must go - To guess it, puzzles scholars - To gain it, Men have borne Contempt of Generations And Crucifixion, shown - Faith slips - and laughs, and rallies - Blushes, if any see - Plucks at a twig of Evidence - And asks a Vane, the way - Much Gesture, from the Pulpit - Strong Hallelujahs roll - Narcotics cannot still the Tooth That nibbles at the soul -
They shut me up in Prose – (445)
04/28/2026 14:58h
They shut me up in Prose – As when a little Girl They put me in the Closet – Because they liked me “still”   – Still! Could themself have peeped – And seen my Brain – go round – They might as wise have lodged a Bird For Treason – in the Pound – Himself has but to will And easy as a Star Look down opon Captivity – And laugh – No more have I –
There's a certain Slant of light, (320)
04/28/2026 14:58h
There's a certain Slant of light, Winter Afternoons – That oppresses, like the Heft Of Cathedral Tunes – Heavenly Hurt, it gives us – We can find no scar, But internal difference – Where the Meanings, are – None may teach it – Any – 'Tis the seal Despair – An imperial affliction Sent us of the Air – When it comes, the Landscape listens – Shadows – hold their breath – When it goes, 'tis like the Distance On the look of Death –
There is no Frigate like a Book (1286)
04/28/2026 14:58h
There is no Frigate like a Book To take us Lands away Nor any Coursers like a Page Of prancing Poetry – This Traverse may the poorest take Without oppress of Toll – How frugal is the Chariot That bears the Human Soul –
Tell all the truth but tell it slant — (1263)
04/28/2026 14:58h
Tell all the truth but tell it slant — Success in Circuit lies Too bright for our infirm Delight The Truth's superb surprise As Lightning to the Children eased With explanation kind The Truth must dazzle gradually Or every man be blind —
Surgeons must be very careful (156)
04/28/2026 14:58h
Surgeons must be very careful When they take the knife! Underneath their fine incisions Stirs the Culprit -Life!
Success is counted sweetest (112)
04/28/2026 14:58h
Success is counted sweetest By those who ne'er succeed. To comprehend a nectar Requires sorest need. Not one of all the purple Host Who took the Flag today Can tell the definition So clear of victory As he defeated – dying – On whose forbidden ear The distant strains of triumph Burst agonized and clear!
